Buying your first computer!

So, you are about to purchase your first computer . . .

Ask yourself:

  1. Where do you plan to use it? At office or home?

  2. What do you want to do? For work, play games, surfing internet, listen to music, store pictures, email or documentation?

  3. Who will use this computer? Your employer, staff, parents, grandparents or children?

  4. Any specific Branding? IBM or HP?

  5. Budget? Do you have a fixed budget or you may adjust accordingly with you need?

Once you are certain with your need you can consider what computer to purchase.

It is always advisable to purchase a computer package on your first time; unless you have someone to help you buy parts and assemble the computer with you specifications.

For home and basic office use, you may consider purchasing a desktop Personal Computer(PC) with preloaded software because PC price is much lower compare to a notebook computer. Notebooks are great with its portability but it might cost more than your average PC with same functionality.

Many people may want to access the internet and email and that is about all. Some may have school children that prefer the educational material. Others may want a computer for a little word processing or simple card games. Today's PC are good in all of those areas. But if your primary need is for doing audio, video or graphics, then you will want to look for a computer suited to multimedia.

Let’s peek through some of the computer capabilities:

#1 Processor is the heart of a computer. Different types of processors have different speeds; selection of the processor is depending on your computer usage. Like for gaming purpose, you need a higher processor.

#2 RAM means Random Access Memory. High RAM means high speed. RAM range from 128mb to 4GB (and increasing). If you purchase computer for normal use like word processing or email, 512mb RAM is more than sufficient. If you purchase computer for gaming use, you may need 1GB RAM or more depending on type of games you play plus you might need a good graphic and sound system.

#3 Hard Disk is for the storage of data. For normal purpose use 80GB is enough. If you want to store pictures, you may consider increase your hard disk space or purchase an additional external hard disk.

#4 For Monitor/Display, Flat panel display is great for saving space and clarity of the display are now quite impressive.

#5 Software is the application that you require to work around on computer. Most computer come with pre-installed software, find out what software the PC comes with and work it out for your need only. Unnecessary software might reduce your PC performance.

For branding, choose manufacturer that gives you good warranty, quality and customer service.

Finally, work on your budget. Different specification has different rates. Computer with high specification will definitely having more price than the lower specification. So take note on your needs and work along with it.
